In mid-2018, one of the prison warders whispered to him that his name had appeared on a list and his release was imminent. Gareth Rutherford will be home soon.
Soon after the jailer’s whisper, I began re-reading my 67 letters and between each one, I inserted a short chapter. This project visits the lives of two old friends, living far apart, both trapped: One in a foreign jail … deprived of liberty … but with no responsibility, the other short-leashed to a rat-wheel alimony trap of his own making.
And the joys and sorrows that go along with our enchanting life, here on Earth.
About the author:
Carlos Liltved was born in Spain in 1964 to opera singer parents. In late 1969 the family moved to Cape Town, where he and his two brothers grew up before branching out into the wider world. Letters to Kuwait - being a hybrid of autobiography, biography and socio-anthropological comment - deals with all of this. Carlos now lives with his artist partner Zaan Claassens. Their time is divided between Cape Town and Canada and the places in between.
