Growing up in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa in the 1950’s and 1960’s the emphasis on the way of life was completely different to the present day some nearly 70 years later.

He writes of his reminiscences of his school days and especially his involvement in sport which was compulsory. Many of life’s lessons were learnt young on the rugby or cricket fields.

Long summers and Christmas holidays along the east Coast and Transkei ‘Wild Coast’ left indelible memories responsible for the book’s title.

A family tie to a farm in the Kei Road district availed Charles of the wonders of nature and instilled a love for the bush that was to last a life time. East London in those days bragged of a modern and highly acclaimed Grand Prix circuit and the early years of modern motor racing were recounted there.

The years at Dale College account for much of this book and the life lessons have been life-long. Army conscription was introduced but is dealt with in the sequel All Over the Shop, which is in progress.

The foundation is thus laid for a huge change in a young life, the end result of which was to lead to exit South Africa for Botswana many years later in the third and final book Gold, At Last.

About the Author:

A ‘baby boomer’ born in 1049, schooling for Charles was at Cambridge Junior in East London, Dale College in King Williams Town and Natal University in Pietermaritzburg.

He has been living in Botswana for the past 30 years and is now semi-retired exploration geologist, still searching for the ‘mother load’ ever though he has been involved in the discovery of many mineral deposits, mainly gold.

In addition to Botswana he has worked in Africa in Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe and overseas in Canada & Australia plus England, France & Ireland. Married to Maryke for over 40 year with two sons who also returned to Botswana with their families with two daughter in each family. They form a wonderfully close knit family group.
