According to a preamble at the front of the book: ‘This is a photographic journey through the countryside, through lands where people dream of a better tomorrow, where everybody has a plan that will work and change their worlds forever. For some, their dreams come true. For many, be they individuals, communitie3s or even societies, things do not work out … And all that is left are reminders of what might have been. The people are long gone, leaving behind nothing but ruins and shattered dreams.’
The photographs are atmospheric. They depict deserted buildings, abandoned motor vehicles, disused railway stations, the ghosts of roadside general dealers, and even a derelict undertaker’s premises. Accompanying each photograph is a short description ofwhat the author imagines the history of the image to be. The result of many of these combinations of black and white images and written fables is a feeling of surreal and slightly ominous nostalgia.
