COMPETENCE REFINED - The 5...

Competence is one of those terms used frequently in a variety of contexts without a practical and usable definition. In all walks of life, but particularly in the work environment, competence is a foundation for success and a sense of accomplishment.

This book puts a stake in the ground and clearly defines what the five elements of competency are. It then expands each sphere so that the reader not only broadens their understanding, but is able to actively start developing themselves, their teams, and the people in their lives in the various areas.

Now That I Am a Man -...

Monelo was fourteen years old when he committed to a Pentecostal church. In this book he explores the consequences of the darker side of Pentecostalism in South Africa: the flawed leadership models, the objectionable conduct of foreign nationals, and the financial greed that characterises some Pentecostal churches. This is a gripping and personal account which is set against the backdrop of the author’s challenging family dynamics, the evolution of his faith in God, and a growing understanding of himself and the world as he matured into a man, a husband and a father.

ORPHANED, WITH LIVING PARENTS

Many thousands of South African children are brought up by their grandmothers. This is one of the many manifestations of an unstable and distraught society, where the mother to child bond is too often broken, causing pain and a deep-seated sense of loss to both parties. Each Gogo-raised child’s story is different, but the general theme is the same: it deals with abandonment, with only qualified acceptance, but most of all with the simple absence of a real mother presence. The title of Vanessa Neo Mathope’s book – Orphaned, with Living Parents – tells it all. A monstrous imbalance has occurred, and the consequences run deep.

Tilly and the Turtle

Tilly didn't think about what happened when she dropped her plastic lollipop stick on the ground - not until she saw the turtle at the beach. This delightfully illustrated cautionary tale describes Tilly's carefree life on a lovely summer day. After school she goes snorkeling with a friend. On the way to the beach they buy lollipops and Tilly throws her stick carelessly on the ground. But later on the beach they stand and watch some older boys trying to remove a plastic spoon that had somehow got stuck in the turtles nose. Tilly is not slow to make the connection between the spoon and her lollipop stick. From that moment on, she becomes a fervent conservationist, regularly helping to pick up the mountains of litter that beachgoers always seem to leave so thoughtlessly on the sand.

When Christmas Trees were...

Growing up in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa in the 1950’s and 1960’s the emphasis on the way of life was completely different to the present day some nearly 70 years later.

He writes of his reminiscences of his school days and especially his involvement in sport which was compulsory. Many of life’s lessons were learnt young on the rugby or cricket fields.
