The book, entitled Black Sacrifice: The Sinking of the SS Mendi, was written by Rev Dr Gladstone Sandi Baai before his death and was completed posthumously by his daughter, Gandhi Baai. He is the only African historian to have written an
interpretation of the sinking of the SS Mendi. In it, he discusses the event in terms of "black sacrifice", starting before the First World War and ending post-apartheid with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
What if I had told you that the mechanism of your brain is like plasticine and could be moulded to your own unique set of beliefs and hence abilities? Could you afford not to even try to step into a new reality? Would you dare?
When a twenty-nine year-old Indian immigrant arrives from Zanzibar to a cold and bleak post-war London in 1946, he hadn’t expected on finding a mummified corpse in the East End building in which he’d intended to set up shop. Unable to unravel the mystery of the corpse and fearful for his future, he hatches fantastical plans to get rid of it, with unexpected consequences.
He hadn’t planned on romancing the dead man’s nice niece either…
This is a fascinating new novel by Mervyn Nel. Venice experiences a series of art heists. Paintings are stolen from museums and art galleries. Chief Superintendent Gina Rosi of the Italian Police, and Harry Wilson, an art expert who does freelance work for Interpol in the United Kingdom, are commissioned to investigate.
As their investigation deepens, Harry suspects that someone in Gina’s department is providing the thieves with confidential information. Though they are often in agreement on how to take the investigation further, at times they see things differently.
The world is ending. People, animals, plants – there is a universal dying-off of the planet. Rumours persist of a reprieve but none appears. Two dogs and their human companions bond, as they trace a vivid circuit in a region not dissimilar to Cape Town; they encounter the violence and decay as they travel, struggling to survive. It’s a tough passage through societies of degradation and unsettled by a war beyond the mountains that encircle them.
