After her body experiences the Blossom, the confused virgin Vuyi’s heart begins to burn with unquenchable and relentless passion. Her parents and the village practices compel her to travel to the Village of Virtue, where the fi re in her heart would be moulded and, thus, gain permission to reign as queen with the faithful.
‘Okay....the decision has been made’ I advise Kim, my wife of 25 years. ‘I am now going to buy a farm, leave my law firm and pursue the country life. ‘This decision’, I continue, ‘is now final and irrevocable. Theodor, the eighty-five year old protagonist in this engaging short novel, writes of his early years in Johannesburg in the 1930s and 1940s.
The story begins as he remembers how his journey began. It ends with his arrival in the fledgling Israeli state to serve his ancient homeland as a soldier-farmer on an outlying kibbutz. But the main focus is reserved for the often funny and always ironic accounts of the childhood and youth of an intelligent Jewish boy growing up in a dusty mining town in Africa.
