The small Island of St Helena, flung away in mid-South Atlantic Ocean, is one of the most remote inhabited islands in the world – its loneliness breeding a phlegmatic populace as famous for friendliness as the island itself is known for stunning scenery and a captivating history.
Small wonder, then, that the author – in love with St Helena from an early age – resolved to buy a second family home there in 1999, and found herself living there for nearly ten years while her family “commuted” back and forth from Cape Town on the RMS St Helena - the only ship that serves the island.
When a twenty-nine year-old Indian immigrant arrives from Zanzibar to a cold and bleak post-war London in 1946, he hadn’t expected on finding a mummified corpse in the East End building in which he’d intended to set up shop. Unable to unravel the mystery of the corpse and fearful for his future, he hatches fantastical plans to get rid of it, with unexpected consequences.
He hadn’t planned on romancing the dead man’s nice niece either…
Growing up in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa in the 1950’s and 1960’s the emphasis on the way of life was completely different to the present day some nearly 70 years later.
He writes of his reminiscences of his school days and especially his involvement in sport which was compulsory. Many of life’s lessons were learnt young on the rugby or cricket fields.
