This autobiographical account is a book about a young man’s journey from teen-hood to adulthood over a period of 2 years in the SANDF during the mid-70. The journey briefly traces the author’s initiation into the armed forces, the heartbreak of having the tenure in the army increased from one to two years, the hopes of a transfer closer to home and to the entertainment corps, cruelly dashed in a 24 hour change of mind, the hopelessness of a bleak National Service in a dead-end situation, and the sudden change of fortune for the better.

Tilly didn't think about what happened when she dropped her plastic lollipop stick on the ground - not until she saw the turtle at the beach. This delightfully illustrated cautionary tale describes Tilly's carefree life on a lovely summer day. After school she goes snorkeling with a friend. On the way to the beach they buy lollipops and Tilly throws her stick carelessly on the ground. But later on the beach they stand and watch some older boys trying to remove a plastic spoon that had somehow got stuck in the turtles nose. Tilly is not slow to make the connection between the spoon and her lollipop stick. From that moment on, she becomes a fervent conservationist, regularly helping to pick up the mountains of litter that beachgoers always seem to leave so thoughtlessly on the sand.

Theodor, the eighty-five year old protagonist in this engaging short novel, writes of his early years in Johannesburg in the 1930s and 1940s.

The story begins as he remembers how his journey began. It ends with his arrival in the fledgling Israeli state to serve his ancient homeland as a soldier-farmer on an outlying kibbutz. But the main focus is reserved for the often funny and always ironic accounts of the childhood and youth of an intelligent Jewish boy growing up in a dusty mining town in Africa.
